The Catos: Sustainability in the City

Mark and Christine Cato allowed our cameras to visit them one morning at their Morningside home in Pittsburgh, PA. They have two sons, Devlin and Lucien, and several pets as well as three chickens in their backyard. The chickens provide them with eggs and often consume their leftovers. They also have a small garden and are a part of a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program with Edible Earth Farm.

Edible Earth Farm is located in Tionesta, Pennsylvania bordering the Allegheny National Forest and the Allegheny River. The farm is owned by Johnny and April Parker. They started the farm in late 2009 on 5 acres. In 2010, they acquired additional acreage and the farm now spans two properties. In 2010 and in 2011, they offered CSA subscriptions to residents of Pittsburgh’s East End. In 2011, they expanded their CSA to serve the residents of Warren, PA. They also participated in the Oakland Farmers market in 2010 and the Shady Side Academy Farmers market in 2011.
